Choosing the right clothes for your Dubai desert safari is less about fashion and more about comfort, temperature and sand. The good news: you do not need special gear – just smart choices.
Footwear: the sand factor
- Sports shoes or trainers: great for dune bashing and walking, but you will get sand inside.
- Closed sandals: easier to empty, still protective.
- Flip-flops: convenient at camp, less ideal for climbing dunes.
Whatever you pick, be ready to shake out sand more than once.
Clothes for different seasons
Winter (November–March):
- Light layers during the day.
- A cardigan, light jacket or hoodie for cool evenings.
Shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October):
- Breathable fabrics (cotton, linen, moisture-wicking sportswear).
- Thin long sleeves for sun protection.
Summer (June–August):
- Very light, loose clothing that covers skin.
- Avoid heavy denim or thick black fabrics.

Cultural respect and photos
Desert camps are relaxed, but remember you are still in the UAE:
- Avoid extremely revealing outfits.
- Shoulders and knees covered is a safe baseline, especially for shared areas.
For photos:
- Solid colours (white, blue, earth tones) often look better than busy patterns.
- Flowing dresses or scarves create beautiful movement in the wind.
Accessories that make a big difference
- Sunglasses and sunscreen.
- A light scarf or shemagh to protect from wind and sand.
- A hat that will stay on in the breeze.
For overnight safaris, also bring:
- Warm socks.
- A soft layer for sleeping.
What not to wear
- New white sneakers if you will be upset about sand stains.
- Tight, rigid jeans for long sitting periods.
- Heavy jewellery that can snag on seats or boards.
Quick outfit checklist
Dress for the elements, not for the brochure – your future self will thank you when you can relax, climb dunes easily and enjoy the camp without worrying about every grain of sand.
